9/13/2023
POPLAR BLUFF, MO – Suicide Awareness Month, recognized annually in September, presents a significant opportunity to engage with our community and address the critical issue of suicide prevention. Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center (PBRMC) and Family Counseling Center (FCC), a nonprofit organization specializing in mental health services, are holding a community educational event in to address mental health and wellness within our community.
The event will feature a speaker panel of mental health experts from PBRMC and FCC and includes a guest speaker who will share their lived experience. Attendees will gain valuable insights into identifying signs of distress, accessing support resources and fostering a more compassionate community environment.
Randy DeProw, PBRMC’s behavioral health director, expressed enthusiasm about the event stating, “Teaming up with FCC exemplifies our dedication to promoting mental health awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Together, we aim to empower individuals, families and our community with knowledge and resources to prevent suicide and provide support to those in need."
PBRMC’s behavioral health team provides care for a wide range of mental and emotional challenges and disorders, from depression, anxiety disorders and acute mental illness. “We strive to provide individualized behavioral health care for members of the community in a safe, supportive environment, and develop treatment plans to meet the unique mental health needs of each patient,” DeProw added.
Kris Uselton, clinical officer of Crisis Services at FCC Behavioral Health elaborated on the importance of working together stating, “All organizations and community members must join forces to prevent suicide. Communities that work collectively in an intentional and proactive way create the changes needed to increase social connectedness and belonging.
“FCC Behavioral Health and PBRMC are doing just that through this lunch and learn event. This creates a space for connection with the broader community and supports those struggling with isolation, their mental health or having thoughts of suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, please know that you are not alone.” Uselton added.
